As soon as your child enters high school, you are inundated with loads of information. Scheduling, sports, clubs, college prep, standardized testing, grades… the list goes on. There is so much to keep track of as you and your child navigate the world of high school.

I have a unique perspective as a photographer because I am also a high school teacher who runs the yearbook (along with many other hats that I wear at school). Every day, I see just how high school impacts and shapes the lives of so many students. As we prepare to send them off to the next great moments in their lives, it is important to mark who they have become in high school. This transition is one of the most important, and for many high school seniors, this transition is one of the scariest transitions that they will encounter. And it is simultaneously exciting for them. For parents, this moment brings a lot of emotions. Marking this milestone is as much for parents as it is for the seniors.

My favorite thing about senior photos is that I can spend time learning about each senior. By the end of a session, I have a pretty good idea of what kind of student they see themselves as, their plans for their future, and who they are outside of school. This allows me to capture photos of your child in a way that showcases how you and their friends really know them. Their photos become a one-of-a-kind gallery that encapsulates them. And that is so important.

So much of high school is about finding a balance between fitting in and finding yourself. Your child’s senior session is the perfect time to celebrate the growth you’ve seen over the course of their high school years and their plans for their future.

Here are a few basic facts about senior photos to know before booking your session:

Seniors usually have their photos done sometime between the summer of their junior and senior year and can book all the way until the first few weeks of the first quarter.

  1. Seniors will get to pick which photo they want included in the Yearbook, and each school has its own requirements and deadlines. I help each of my clients navigate that if they want assistance.
  2. There are a variety of packages that photographers offer for senior sessions. It is often broken down by the amount of locations and/or outfits a senior can wear. I offer recommendations for how many locations and outfits we can use in a single session. My packages are based on how much time we will spend together.
  3. Senior portraits often end up on parents’ walls as art. Be sure to find a photographer with a classic vibe to ensure that you will want to leave the photos up for as long as possible.
  4. Photographers will help with outfit recommendations and location choices. You don’t have to do that alone.
  5. Photographers often offer retouching, but some will limit the number of photos they retouch. Be clear on the expectations when you book. (I retouch each of the photos that I share with you! There is no limit!)
